چکیده

The seven-valent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (7vPCV) includes serotype 6B. No invasive pneumococcal disease (IPD) caused by this serotype has occurred in Indigenous people in north Queensland since 7vPCV was made freely available to Indigenous children in the latter part of 2001.3 Although 7vPCV does not include serotype 6A, the experience in the United States of America (USA) indicates that the serotype 6B antigen included in 7vPCV provides cross-protection against serotype 6A IPD in children.4,5 However, these studies were undertaken before serotype 6C was first recognised, and therefore serotype 6C cases may have been inadvertently included in what were then considered to have been serotype 6A IPD.

Novel pneumococcal serotypes 6C and 6D: anomaly or harbinger.

Clinical use of the 7-valent pneumococcal protein conjugate (PCV7) vaccine, which includes serotypes 4, 6B, 9V, 14, 18C, 19F, and 23F, dramatically reduced invasive pneumococcal disease (IPD); however, the effectiveness was diminished due to serotype shift. Although shift due to known serotypes was anticipated, shift by misidentified serotypes was unexpected. We describe the experience with new...

Differential effects of pneumococcal vaccines against serotypes 6A and 6C.

BACKGROUND Because classic pneumococcal serotyping methods cannot distinguish between serotypes 6A and 6C, the effects of pneumococcal vaccines against serotype 6C are unknown. Pneumococcal vaccines contain serotype 6B but not serotypes 6A and 6C. METHODS We used a phagocytic killing assay to estimate the immunogenicity of the 7-valent conjugate vaccine (PCV7) in children and the 23-valent po...

Clonal Expansion of the Macrolide Resistant ST386 within Pneumococcal Serotype 6C in France

In France, the use of the 7-valent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV7) lead to an overall significant decrease in PCV7 invasive pneumococcal disease (IPD) incidence. However, the decrease in vaccine serotype prevalence was partially counterbalanced by the serotype replacement phenomenon. In this study, we analyzed the role of the newly described serotype 6C as one of the replacement serotypes...

Epidemiology of Invasive Pneumococcal Disease in Older People in Spain (2007–2009): Implications for Future Vaccination Strategies

BACKGROUND Recently, the 13-valent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV13) has been recommended for adults. We analyzed the epidemiology of invasive pneumococcal disease (IPD) in older adults in Spain before PCV13 introduction. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS IPD episodes, defined as clinical findings together with an invasive pneumococcal isolate, were prospectively collected from patients age...

Clonal Expansion within Pneumococcal Serotype 6C after Use of Seven-Valent Vaccine

Streptococcus pneumoniae causes invasive infections, primarily at the extremes of life. A seven-valent conjugate vaccine (PCV7) is used to protect against invasive pneumococcal disease in children. Within three years of PCV7 introduction, we observed a fourfold increase in serotype 6C carriage, predominantly due to a single clone. We determined the whole-genome sequences of nineteen S. pneumoni...
